Traveling A River

By Trevor Kugler

One of the most relaxing and enjoyable things to do on this wonderful planet is to float down a river. Traveling a river soothes a person's soul. I think Zhuangzi said it best, "I know the joy of fishes in the river through my own joy, as I go walking along the same river." Exactly, walking along or flowing with a river is one of the best ways to relax and get in touch with nature and all she has to offer.

Human beings have known for all of time that a river means life. The two are literally synonymous. If you're ever stuck in the wilderness, do your best to find a river and follow it. It's said that rivers always lead to people (eventually). Have you noticed that many of our towns and cities were built along rivers?

When I speak of traveling a river, I of course am not speaking of traveling a river is some sort of speed boat, or even a boat with a motor. I'm speaking of traveling a river either by walking, canoeing, or some form of inflatable boat. It seems to me that mechanization gets in the way of what a river is truly offering us. Have you ever been on a river in a boat with a motor, skiing or fishing, and just turned the engine off and let the boat float naturally with the current? Of course you have, and why is that? Because when the mechanization of the motor is out of the picture, you're back in touch with what the river has to offer. Simply peace and solitude, plus at that point you're working with nature and simply flowing, rather than using the motor to work against nature.

Traveling a river is easily one of the best things a person can do for their soul. I know for me, listening to the gurgling sound of a flowing river is the best thing I can do for myself. I used to drink beer to relax and feel good, and then I realized that wasn't at all necessary. I could feel good simply by traveling a river and listening.
